These sections give the learner a usable mental model first, so the practice feels like application rather than guesswork.
Core method
A formal abductive argument has four stages. First, list the observations that need explaining. Second, list at least two live candidate hypotheses that could explain them. Third, compare the hypotheses against the observations using explanatory virtues. Fourth, state the best current explanation, with the right level of confidence.
Each stage is a distinct activity. Skipping the observation stage produces vague arguments. Skipping the rival-hypothesis stage reduces abduction to storytelling. Skipping the comparison stage produces unsupported rankings. Skipping the conclusion-calibration stage produces overconfident claims. All four stages matter.
What to look for
Stage 1 discipline
The observation stage sounds trivial but often isn't. You need to list the facts that any candidate explanation must account for, including inconvenient ones that push against your favored hypothesis. Leaving out awkward observations is a form of cheating the comparison.
A good list keeps observations separate from interpretations. 'The dashboard lights were dim' is an observation. 'The battery is weak' is an interpretation — it belongs in the hypothesis stage, not the observation stage. This separation is what makes the comparison honest.
What to look for
Stage 2 discipline
A rival hypothesis is 'live' if it is genuinely plausible given the context, not just technically possible. 'A meteor struck the engine' is not a live rival for a car that won't start on a normal morning. Live rivals share the field and force the comparison to do real work.
Aim for at least two rivals and ideally three. When you can only think of one candidate, that is a warning sign: either your imagination is too narrow, or you are already committed to the answer and are refusing to generate alternatives. Force yourself to brainstorm before selecting.
What to look for
Stage 4 discipline
The final stage is to state the best current explanation with language that matches the strength of the comparison. If one hypothesis clearly dominates on every virtue, you can write 'Hypothesis A is the best explanation of the evidence.' If the lead is slim, you should say 'Hypothesis A is currently the best-supported explanation, but the margin is small.'
This calibration is not a stylistic choice — it is part of the argument. Overstating turns good reasoning into bad, because it claims more than the comparison actually supports. A cautious conclusion that fits the evidence is always better than a confident one that does not.

Coherence
The sprinkler hypothesis fits the background conditions (clear sky, dry neighbor, active timer) more closely than rain or a leak.
Conclusion
The sprinkler running is the best current explanation of the evidence. A quick check that water is coming from sprinkler heads (not from a standing puddle) would confirm it.
